A British political journalist revealed that top authorities in the United Kingdom colluded with tech platforms to “tweak algorithms” during the peak of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Talk TV International Editor Isabel Oakeshott made this revelation in a piece for Spectator magazine, basing her article on the book “Pandemic Diaries” she co-wrote with former British Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
According to her, the U.K. Department of Health and Social Care under Hancock and the U.K. Cabinet Office “harnessed the full power of the state to crush individuals and groups whose views were seen as a threat to public acceptance of official messages and policy.” They engaged the help of a unit that previously worked on stifling the influence of the Islamic State to deal with “anti-vaxxers.”
Oakeshott also noted that Hancock genuinely considered those who disagreed with him on how to handle the situation as ‘mad and dangerous'” and more importantly, as persons that “needed to be shut down.” His policy of zero tolerance did not spare doctors, scientists and academics, such as those behind the Great Barrington Declaration. Back in January 2020, Hancock admitted that his special adviser was already in conversation with Twitter about the ways to “tweak” the platform’s algorithms. There were also reports that he got in touch regarding the same matter with former British PM and politician Nick Clegg, now president for global affairs at Meta. Then Facebook’s vice president of global affairs and communications, Clegg was reportedly “happy to oblige.”
Hancock’s critics, however, were not impressed with his book. People took to the review section of his work to express their disgust.
During the peak of the pandemic, he discharged care home residents from hospitals without testing by claiming that staff introduced the virus into care homes. As a result of his decision, thousands of people are believed to have died and it led to outbreaks in care homes across the country.
“Anyone who gives this moron money for spouting his manipulated lies needs a brain transplant,” a user named Phyllis Smith wrote.
“How dare you blame care workers for taking COVID-19 into care homes,” said a Twitter user named Claire. “My daughter’s a care worker. She did 15-hour days caring for her clients. She used PPE multiple times & often had to wear bin bags. She cried so many times.”
“I fail to grasp why Mail on Sunday thinks Matt Hancock’s diaries are worth eight pages of mollycoddling. People DIED needlessly. The investment in editorial space is out of proportion to his commercial popularity and standing. Madness!” said David Yelland, former journalist and editor of The Sun, in response to Hancock making it onto the front page of the Daily Mail-affiliated tabloid.
“As a constituent, I shan’t be (reading your book),” user Linda Johns replied to Hancock’s tweet promoting his book. “We need a formal, official, accurate and truthful analysis of the political and financial decisions made during your tenure. Frankly, your private life interests me not one iota. Like millions, national chaos does.”
